What is isopentane used for?

Isopentane is used as a co-blowing agent with n-pentane in EPS/XPS foam production, as a propellant in aerosol products, and as a low-boiling solvent in specialized applications.

Isopentane has a lower boiling point (28°C) than n-pentane (36°C), giving faster expansion. Blending the two (e.g., 80/20 or 70/30 n-/iso-) allows precise control of foam density and cell structure.

Isopentane is extremely flammable (flash point <-50°C), even more volatile than n-pentane. ATEX Zone 0/1 compliance, explosion-proof equipment, nitrogen blanketing, and strict no-ignition-source protocols are required. ADR UN 1265.

Common EPS blends are 80/20 (80% n-pentane, 20% isopentane) and 70/30. The exact ratio affects foam expansion rate and final properties. We supply both pure components and pre-blended ratios.
