What is isophorone used for?

Isophorone is used as a high-performance solvent in coatings and inks, and as an intermediate for vitamin E synthesis and chloroxylenol (antimicrobial) production. It also finds use in extraction and grinding aids.

Isophorone has a very high boiling point (215°C) and slow evaporation rate, making it ideal for high-solid coatings and applications requiring extended open time. Its cyclic structure provides excellent solvency for epoxy, PU, and acrylic resins.

Isophorone is a premium solvent for high-performance coatings (epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic systems). Its low evaporation prevents surface defects and allows better flow and leveling in thick-film applications.

Isophorone evaporates much slower than MEK or MIBK due to its higher molecular weight and boiling point. It’s chosen when very slow drying and superior solvency are required, though it’s typically more expensive.
