What is n-pentane used for?

N-pentane is primarily used as a blowing agent for expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation. It’s also used as an extraction solvent and as a chromatography standard.

Pentane is the main blowing agent for polystyrene foam insulation used in buildings. During EPS bead expansion, pentane vaporizes to create the foam structure, providing excellent thermal insulation with low density.

N-pentane is extremely flammable with a flash point of -49°C. It requires ATEX Zone 0 equipment, nitrogen blanket during storage, explosion-proof facilities, and strict ignition source control. ADR Class 3, UN 1265.

N-pentane (bp 36°C) evaporates slightly slower than isopentane (bp 28°C). In EPS, blends like 80/20 or 70/30 n-pentane/isopentane are common to optimize expansion rate and foam properties.
