What is n-hexane used for?

N-hexane is used for vegetable oil extraction, as a solvent in adhesives and rubber cements, and in polymerisation reactions. However, its neurotoxicity is driving substitution in many applications.

N-hexane metabolizes to 2,5-hexanedione, which causes peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) with chronic exposure. OELs are 20 ppm in most jurisdictions. Many companies are switching to isohexane or other alternatives.

Pure n-hexane (CAS 110-54-3) is >95% n-hexane isomer. Commercial hexanes (CAS 64742-49-0) are a naphtha cut containing a mix of C5-C7 isomers with 50-90% n-hexane plus methylpentanes and other components.

N-hexane is UN 1208, Class 3 (flammable liquid), Packing Group II. Flash point around -22°C requires explosion-proof handling equipment, ATEX compliance, and ADR-certified transport.
