What is isohexane used for?

Isohexane is used as a food-grade extraction solvent (oils, flavors), in electronics cleaning, and as a reaction solvent. Its lower neurotoxicity compared to n-hexane makes it a safer alternative.

Isohexane does not metabolize into 2,5-hexanedione (the neurotoxic compound formed from n-hexane). This makes isohexane far safer for workers, leading to its adoption in extraction plants prioritizing worker health.

Many modern extraction facilities are switching to isohexane to eliminate n-hexane neurotoxicity risk. The process changes are minimal, and worker safety improvements justify the typically higher cost of isohexane.

Isohexane is classified as Class 3 (flammable liquid). Flash point is around -20°C. Standard ADR precautions apply: explosion-proof equipment, ventilation, proper grounding, and no ignition sources.
