What is polymerisation grade hexane used for?

Polymerisation grade hexane is used as a solvent in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) production via Ziegler-Natta and metallocene catalyst processes. It’s also used in elastomer synthesis requiring ultra-low impurities.

Catalysts used in polymerisation (Ziegler-Natta, metallocene) are extremely sensitive to impurities. Very low levels of sulfur, water, oxygen, or polar compounds can poison the catalyst, reducing polymer yield and quality.

Polymerisation grade has much stricter specifications: lower sulfur (<1 ppm), lower water (<10 ppm), and minimal olefins or oxygenates. This higher purity justifies a price premium of 10-30% over extraction grade.

Yes, several European refineries produce polymerisation grade hexane. However, supply is tight during peak polyolefin production periods. We also source from imports when needed to ensure supply continuity.
