What are the main applications of dipropylene glycol?

dipropylene glycol (DPG) is a versatile solvent and chemical intermediate widely used in fragrances, personal care products (skin care, hair care, deodorants), coatings, inks, and adhesives. It also serves as a plasticizer, a coupling agent, and as a key building block in polyurethane polyols and alkyd resins.

DPG is produced as a co-product during the manufacture of propylene glycol, through the hydrolysis of propylene oxide with excess water at high temperature and pressure. The resulting product is a mixture of three structural isomers, which gives it its characteristic physical properties such as low vapor pressure and high miscibility with water.

dipropylene glycol is not classified as a dangerous good under ADR, RID, or IMDG regulations. It is a non-hazardous liquid, which simplifies logistics and reduces transport constraints compared to many other industrial solvents. Standard documentation (SDS, COA, TDS) is nevertheless provided with every shipment.
