MDP is a propylene glycol ether (P-series), which lacks the reproductive toxicity classification of ethylene glycol ethers (E-series). This makes MDP safer for workers and easier to formulate in regulated applications.

MDP is the dipropylene glycol version (heavier, C7) while PM is monopropylene glycol (lighter, C4). MDP evaporates slower and has higher solvency, making it preferred when longer open time is needed.
