What is MEA primarily used for?

MEA is used for acid gas treatment (CO2 and H2S removal from natural gas and refinery streams), in detergent and surfactant production, wood treatment, and as an intermediate for ethylenediamines and piperazine.

MEA, DEA, and TEA are mono-, di-, and tri-substituted ethanolamines. As substitution increases (MEA→DEA→TEA), basicity decreases and molecular weight increases, affecting gas-treating efficiency and other applications.

MEA is classified as UN 2491, Class 8 (corrosive substance). It’s corrosive to skin and eyes, requiring proper PPE, ventilated storage, and specialized handling procedures for loading/unloading operations.
