What is DEA used for?

DEA is used in gas treatment (CO2/H2S removal), glyphosate herbicide production, polyol synthesis for polyurethanes, cosmetic formulations, and cocamide production for detergents and shampoos.

DEA is a key precursor for glyphosate (the world’s most-used herbicide). It reacts with phosphonomethyl intermediates to form the diethanolamine salt of glyphosate, which is then formulated into agricultural products.

Pure DEA is classified as UN 3259 when solid (above ~28°C it’s liquid). In liquid form at ambient temperature, it may not require ADR placarding depending on concentration. Confirm with your logistics provider.

Cocamide DEA is a surfactant produced by reacting DEA with coconut oil fatty acids. It’s used as a foam booster and viscosity builder in shampoos, soaps, and detergents. We supply the DEA feedstock for this production.
