What is extraction grade hexane used for?

Extraction grade hexane is primarily used for extracting vegetable oils from soybeans, sunflower, rapeseed, and other oilseeds. This is the dominant global application, processing millions of tonnes of oilseeds annually.

Extraction grade has lower purity requirements and may contain more n-hexane and residual aromatics. Polymerisation grade requires very low sulfur, water, and olefin content to avoid poisoning Ziegler-Natta catalysts.

N-hexane is neurotoxic, causing peripheral neuropathy with chronic exposure. Occupational exposure limits (OELs) are strictly enforced (typically 20 ppm). Many facilities are switching to isohexane or other alternatives.

Hexane availability depends on refinery output and demand. European supply comes from both local refineries and imports. Lead times are typically 1-2 weeks for drums/IBCs, longer for isotanks.
